The story of
Red Riding Hood
Unlike any retelling before, Red Riding Hood: The Moral to the Story draws out the moral of the story through music, dance, humor, and cultural symbolism. The musical captivates audiences with a blend of original score and choreography, interwoven with excerpts from contemporary popular music to remain relevant and accessible across generations.
The characters of this story are both male and female, with each scene shifting ethnicity to reflect the universality of the tale. The Grandmother, the Trees of Proverbs, and the Wolf take on new forms throughout the performance, reminding audiences that this story has been told in every language as a bedtime story, but never with the moral so clearly illuminated. The curtain opens in Kenya among the Maasai, whose vibrant red attire, music, and dance honor indigenous traditions. The story then shifts into the 21st century, where Red Riding Hood, now 18, curious, and naïve dismisses her grandmother’s warnings about the Wolf. The Wolf appears not as a menace but as witty, charming, and alluring, drawing Red in with charisma. Along the way, Red meets the Trees of Proverbs: Ms. Oak, Ms. Pine, Ms. Cherry, and Mr. Elm Wood ; who, through humor and urgency, remind her that ‘you cannot fix what you cannot face.’
Blending music, movement, and metaphor, the production speaks across cultures and generations. Red Riding Hood: The Moral to the Story is both entertaining and thought provoking a cultural commentary and theatrical experience that lingers long after the curtain falls.
